A Day In the Life of the World
We wrote to many countries around the world asking them to answer the same questions at the same time. We wanted to discover if people did the same things, ate the same things liked the same things and worried about the same things..... Here are our results..... We will develop this project in the coming weeks.
Many teachers answered as the schools in the Southern Hemisphere were closed for Summer.

Western Australia: 28°C Humid
Nepal: mild and cool in the evening
Nanango Australia: 35°C Very hot! No wind, no clouds. Chance of a thunderstorm tonight.
New Zealand: 25°C A lovely warm day, but quite a bit of cloud
Trinidad and Tobago(Caribbean):
It was vey cool in the morning
(cold for us here in the caribbean) about 22 degrees celcius.
Then it got hotter as the day went along, at midday it was about
31 degrees celcius. There was no rain, as this is the dry
period. However it was cloudy mainly low lying stratus clouds.
Canada: -8°C with a wind chill of -16°C, snow! Very cold and windy!!
Wales: 9.6°C cloudy and raining by the end of the day
Brazil:
Australia: 23 degrees. Cold in the morning and sunny in the afternoon
Nepal: It was mild sunny
Canada: We had a snow storm! The temperature was only -3 (-13 with wind chill) so it was not bad at all. Lots of snow though!
Austria: sunny and cloudy mixed, mild.
Mexico: The school (and my home) are a few hundred metres above Mexico City and so we are at about 2, 700 metres above sea level. The temperature up here was only 3 degrees c. at 8am and by midday it was up to 22. We enjoyed a beautiful sunrise, clear blue skies, bright sunshine and a wonderful view of the two volcanoes on the other side of Mexico City valley. By 5 pm there was a strong wind and thousands of leaves blew off the trees , changing the landscape suddenly.
Kenya: It was moderate that day with temperature of about 24 degree census.
Philippines: the weather is too cold it was 10.6 degrees centigrade.
Germany: cloudy, but nearly no rain
Western Australia: . Bush fires in Western Australia. Debate about Perth changing to recycled water.Highest water shortage in Western Australia since 1940. U.s soldiers still fighting in Baghdad. Windows vista.
Nepal: The Delivery of Prime Minister's speech in the name of nation. Because our country is facing some unrests in southern part of the country.
Nanango Australia: Water shortage crisis, we have been in a drought for a long time with no good rain. The dams are very low, so they are talking about recycling sewage water.
New Zealand: New Zealand winning the one day cricket match last night against England!!!!!
Trinidad and Tobago(Caribbean): The main headlines on the national news was that the Two more people were murdered again this morning and the villagers were holding another protest against rising rates. Residents in another settlement were protesting government plans to put a sewage waste plant in the area that is their savanna. And despite protest, ALCOA Aluminium Smelting plant has been granted permission to set up.
Canada: War on Poverty and Income gap increasing for immigrants.
Wales:
Brazil: Security - The risks of construction of the subway in SÃO PAULO where seven citizens have died..
Australia: Water shortages because of the drought.
Nepal: The unrest in thew Easten Plains of Nepal and the Leaders meet with the PM
Canada: So, it seems Canadians are not buying ‘green cars’ as a priority when shopping for cars, it is our 23rd of 26 choices. Not impressed. Our opposition in government is pushing for our participation in the Kyoto Agreement (which our current conservative government has reneged on). In ugly news, Canadians are travelling to China to get organ transplants. The ugly part is that the organs may be coming from executed prisoners.
Austria: Bush’s criticism of the Austrians trade with Iran.
Mexico: President Calderon’s visit to Europe…the World Bank chiefs’ holey socks…climate and planet change and Mexico’s progress and plans…and a local murder case solved.
Kenya: Six firms listed in bid for passports tender.

Nepal: Deforestation of my surrounding causing decreasing the discharge of water from natural spring from where I collect water everyday.

Canada: I hope my daughter, Alex (who is Deaf) will be accepted to a Leadership camp this summer in the United States. It is organized by the NAD (National Association of the Deaf). It is for a whole month! A great opportunity for her.

Mexico: The kids decided to vote almost unanimously for The Simpsons…but in Spanish (actually much better than the English language version!). 3 of the form 1’s preferred Sponge Bob…called here ‘Bob Esponja’ . My fave prog. Was a soap opera called Montecristo.
Kenya: Who is Smarter Now and the Whitney Opra

Western Australia: Got up washed my hair. Made breakfast. My friend and hair dresser Sarah, is practising on my hair for the ball. Relaxed, watched t.v and checked my email. Got ready for a new year at school tomorrow.
Nepal: I got up early in the morning. Since I live in remote village of my country, so no basic faciliteis are available. I went to collect the water from natural spring (which is my regular source of water for every propose). Collected one pot full water and back to home (it took almost one hour). Prepared food for my self and get prepared to go school.
Nanango Australia: Out of bed at 4:30am to do partime cleaning. Got home at 7:30 to help children get ready for school then set about on washing and buy a few groceries. Sat down at computer desk to do an assignment. I am a trainee teacher with 5 months left to study.
New Zealand: I got up at 7am. Had breakfast of two pieces of toast with vegemite (a spread like marmite but nicer). Went to school for a meeting with some other teachers
Trinidad and Tobago(Caribbean):
This morning I said prayers, had
a visit from my friend whom I had not seen in a long time. Left
for work and met with horrendous traffic which made me late.
Canada: Got up early and went to my exercise class. Read the newspaper. Shovelled snow from the driveway. Picked up some books at the library, answered email and went grocery shopping.
Wales:
Brazil: I have breakfast and go to school.Around twelve o'clock I lunch
Australia: Get up at 6.00 am and get ready for school. Watch TV before school. Mum drove me.
Nepal: I woke up at 5. Had breakfast at 8:45. Watched news headlines on TV. Went office at 9:45
Canada: I drove my daughter to her school and then drove to work. Arrived early! Had lots of time to have coffee and chat with my friends. My class is working on the Spiderwick Chronicles and we spent the morning making Sprites and looking around the school for signs of Sprites in our school (like footprints, missing food, holes in the walls, etc.) It was a fun morning.
Austria: Walked to my office, enjoyed the light morningand glad it was not slippery. Interviewed a prospective teacher.
Mexico: Most of the students wake up between 6am and 6.30am. Me too. The traffic in Mexico City is so bad, that it can take the school busses over two hours to complete their route.
School starts with registration at 8.20. There are 3 classes in the morning and then a break of (usually) 45 min’s at 11.15. During break, the tuck-shop is open, you can play football or basketball and as it was a sunny day on Wednesday, there were a lot of games going on at the same time. There was also a swimming gala in the pool and the 4 different houses competed in a variety of swimming races. Brightman House won. Because of the gala, classes were postponed for half an hour and so the first period of the afternoon was lost !!!
Kenya: Wake up in the morning , brush my teeth then put on school uniform , take breakfast then when the bus come. I leave for school. In school we learn alot of subjects.
Philippines: My life in the morning:wake up at 6 in the morning,take a bath,fix myself for school,prepare breakfast,eat and go to school.
Germany:
Pupils get up between 6 and
7, school is from 7.50 to 1.10, pupils go to school by bike or
by bus
Western Australia: Packed my bag ready for tomorrow. Helped mum tidy rooms ready for the visit off my family from Yorkshire. Had lunch. Sat outside. Fed the cat.
Nepal:I went to school, at 10 AM. Since I teach the Social Science subject I prepard some of my teaching materials. My teaching lession was on environmental degradation.
Nanango Australia: Finished assignment and posted it off to University. Helped aground the house with chores.
New Zealand: Spent the afternoon at school getting ready for the new year. Only one more week of holidays and then the children will be back. After that I biked home to have a play with my two daughters before dinnertime. They got a trampoline for Christmas and love bouncing on it.
Trinidad and Tobago(Caribbean): This afternoon was very hot, and my students and I had lunch under the trees together relaxing and cooling out. We also took some weather measurements. After we spent the rest of the afternoon working on a banner for a rally they are hosting this weekend.
Canada: Drove for an hour to visit with an old friend. Chatted for an hour then drove home.
Wales:
Brazil: In the afternoon I take a nap and go out to play soccer with friends and schoolmates near my house
Australia: We had computers at school. Mum picked me up. I played cricket in the backyard until tea.
Nepal: Superivised a teacher class. Read ELT Forum.
Canada: Tried to catch up on my emails and made a Valentines fun activities booklet for my students. Went outside for recess with two of the students I work with. Learned about electro-magnetism in Science class, it was FUN!
Austria: Walked to the lake afterlunch then returned to my office
Mexico: There were only 2 of the 3 classes in the afternoon. We finished school at 2.30pm. Some of the kids stayed on for extra activities…sports, tuition, drama rehearsals and film club, and there were 2 kids in after-school detention. Most of them (47 in total) either went home on the school busses or were picked up by parents or chauffeurs.
I walked home and played with my cats, had a sandwich, marked some homework and planned Thursdays’ classes.
Kenya: After lunch we went back to classes then do some maths and english.
Philippines: In the Afternoon:go home,prepare lunch,fix the table,eat,then go to school.
Germany: training (Taekwondo, handball, jazz dance, tennis, ballet dancing, swimming, baseball, circle training); music (flute, saxophone, guitar, keyboard); homework
Western Australia: . Went to the Chinese for tea.Spoke to my friends on the phone. Played the Sims 2 on the computer with my brother Andrew. Got ready for school. Had a shower. Called my boyfriend. Went to sleep.
Nepal:When I back from School in the evening, I went to my farm field -
Nanango Australia: After children went to bed I continued with some more study then watched some television.
New Zealand: After dinner I played with my two wee girls again, before getting them ready for bed. After that I sit down in front of the television to relax and get ready to watch the first episode of the 3rd season of Lost!!!
Trinidad and Tobago(Caribbean): I said prayers and did my school work. I then picked up my sister from work. And made dinner. Then we ate infront of the television and talked about our day. After we will do the dishes and have a cup of tea on the veranda before going to bed.
Canada: Prepared and cooked dinner, washed and dried the dishes, worked on a crossword puzzle and watched a little television. Filled in this survey. Shovelled snow from the driveway again! Read a few chapters of my library book.
Wales:
Brazil: In the evening I talk to my father Ronaldo, my mother Theresa, my brother Raul and my little sister Maria Fernanda. I also watch soap opera with my family before going to bed.
Australia: I watched Home and Away and Neighbours and went to bed. DAD read with me.
Nepal: Prepared dinner. Played and spent time with my lovely kids.
Canada: Watched my favourite episode of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” with my daughter (we laughed and laughed) while eating supper (quiche! Yum!) Did I mention how much I love my daughter? (she did the laundry while I sat and did nothing) Went to bed early because I have been having late nights.
Austria: Walk along the lakebefore dark, grocery shopping before the village shops close.
Mexico: Most of the kids stayed home…did an average of an hour and a half’s homework and then chatted on-line to friends, played computer games, watched TV or went to their clubs to play sports.
Kenya: Came back from school then took tea after which i did my home work.
Philippines: In the Evening: go tell my sisters to go home, study, watch tv, fix my things for school, prepare the table, eat and go to sleep.
Germany: pupils mostly watch TV
Western Australia: Crunchy nut cornflakes
Nepal:I ate a cup of tea and took one chapati made from millet (which I have grown in my farm, all these things were made by using indegineous tools and techniques).
Nanango Australia: Cerial , coffee
New Zealand: Toast and a cup of milo
Trinidad and Tobago(Caribbean): No breakfast.
Canada: Kellogg’s Museli cereal and a breakfast pita with a cup of coffee.
Wales:
Brazil: I ate black coffee, french bread and butter.
Australia: 3 Weetbix, 2 pieces of toast and orange juice
Nepal: Boiled rice Vegetable Curry
Canada: Two pieces of toast and coffee. On the upside, I ate veggies for snack (carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, celery and baby tomatoes). Our whole school gets snack every morning.
Austria: Muesli with fruit, coffee
Mexico: I was naughty and only had coffee and a bowl of hot cereal. Most of the kids had a rushed , cold breakfast at home and many of them were already eating their packed lunches, between registration and first period.
Kenya: Tea and dry bread
Germany: cornflakes, other cereals; Bread with Nutella (chocolate cream), German sausage or cheese; hot chocolate, milk, orange juice or water.
Western Australia: Roast chicken dinner and salad.
Nepal: boiled rice
Nanango Australia: Fruit and water
New Zealand: A bread roll and custard slice, plus a drink of Mountain Dew
Trinidad and Tobago(Caribbean): Dhalpuri Roti and Channa.
Canada: A toasted roast beef and havarti cheese sandwich on whole wheat. About 25 seedlesss green grapes.

Australia: Chicken salad roll and strawberry big M milk
Nepal: Chappati, Vegetables, Fried Dal, Oranges
Canada: More veggies and cream cheese with crackers. We have a hot lunch program for our students, they had: macroni and cheese, chicken wieners, bread, fresh fruit and milk.
Austria: Soup
Mexico: The tuck-shop offers an international fare to the, over 35 nationalities of students. The Mexican menu is traditionally greasy and enjoyed by the Latin students. A lot of the Asian kids bring their own packed food and Wednesday was no exception. Because of the swimming gala and longer break, a lot of the kids actually set up little picnic areas around the gardens. It felt very festive. I had an apple and a cereal bar at break time and a chicken sandwich at home.
Kenya: Rice and cowpease
Germany: pizza; stew; vegetables, potatoes, meat
Western Australia: Chinese
Nepal:Boiled corn rice (it is traditional dish)
Nanango Australia: sausages, salad, apple pie and custard
New Zealand: Potatoes, salad, Barbecue steak, tomatoes
Trinidad and Tobago(Caribbean): Blackeye peas and rice with salad.
Canada: Broiled lamb chops, roasted potatoes, brussels sprouts.
Wales:
Brazil: Salsage and french bread. Fruit juice.
Australia: Steak and vegetables.
Nepal: Rice, Vegetables and beans
Canada: Quiche, chocolate éclair (are you jealous?) and milk. My daughter doesn’t like store bought quiche (I was lazy) so she ate Kraft Dinner, donuts and milk. Not a banner day for nutrition at home. I bought some Rootbeer to drink while watching “Buffy” and my daughter drank some Iceberry Powerade (no accounting for taste, ha ha)
Austria: chicken and vegetables
Mexico: Wednesday seems to have been pizza night for a large percentage of the students. All the Japanese, Koreans and Chinese, Thailandese, Nepali and Indian students, had a typical dish from their countries, cooked at home by their mothers and their maids. I ate quite late in the end…I did myself a chicken and rice dish…………mmmmmmm !
Kenya: That day when i come home and mammy prepared Ugali and fish tilapia the mongo juice after meal.
Germany: same as for breakfast
