Right…Lets start at the very beginning with the title. I know what you’re thinking….Mash and Lola, the Chameleons in the school foyer , turning a bright shade of pink! But no, that has nothing to do with this book……. I chose this book because it had been sitting on my bookcase for quite a while and with it being so bright and colourful, it caught my eye. I could not resist but to pick it up and start to read…….. Rorie, a fun- loving 12 year old, yet very protective older sister, is the main character in today’s story. Alongside is Elsie, a fun, bouncing 7 year old. Together they live a life of pure luxury. I mean …come on! If you lived with multi-millionaire inventors for parents and a sweet little pet Chameleon called Arthur, just like Rorie and Elsie Silk did, then I am positively sure you would be happy. However, if Rorie and Elsie carried on living a happy life with their parents, there would be no story. But because there is a story, something must have happened, and it did! When the two girls return home from school one afternoon and find their parents missing, a search breaks out and the poor girls are sent to live at Poker Bute Hall, the boarding school home of greedy, selfish Uncle Harris and Aunt Irmine, who care for nothing more than money and wealth. Things then start to go terribly wrong and it is from that point onwards that Fiona Dunbar the author, really starts to show her skills as a writer. The girls figure out that the school turns children into maths freaks and so try desperately to escape and when Rorie bumps into a 11 year old called Moll, the only normal girl in the school, their plans then take a turn. The girls make a run for it, with of course, Arthur. But when a heavy storm descends and Rorie gets caught up in the middle of it, a terrible incident occurs. The descriptions in this book produce amazing atmospheres and at many points you feel you are right there in the scene, enduring the emotions that these two girls are going through. I really liked Notila Newbuck the sensitive, yet fashion designer ‘extraordinaire‘, even though she has only a small role in the book. I think Fiona’s imagination ran wild here - perhaps she modelled her on herself? I also enjoyed the contest and how Rorie’s distant related Grandma exposed the matter as to why Uncle Harris and Aunt Irmine should perhaps be sent to prison. I really recommend this book to all of you out there who are thrilled with fascination and excitement happiness or sorrow. Fiona’s skills at writing have excelled thoughout the many pages of this book and I am pretty sure you won’t be able to put it down……Well ,I couldn’t!

by Megan McDonald REVIEW BY Aoife Regan
|
This was the first book I read by the author Megan McDonald, the reason why I choose this book was I thought the funny picture on the front cover reminded me of my sister! The main character in the book is Judy she has a brother called Stink, her best friend is a boy called Rocky and her “pest” friend is Frank Pearl. Judy is always in a mood she has good moods, bad moods, even back to school moods-Judy has them all! Stink who is very annoying always follows Frank, Judy and Rocky wherever they go and as you can imagine this starts Judy yet in another mood. Judy is not looking forward to her new school year because she didn't do anything during the summer holidays, but when her teacher Mr Todd sets them all a project Judy soon changes her mood .The project that they had to do was a collage all about themselves. Judy really enjoyed working on her collage, she involved her friends, they worked on it at each others houses Judy was in a good mood at last until......Stink got involved....I don't want to ruin the story for you, you'll just have to read the book. I really enjoyed this book, I would definitely recommend it to any girls..don't think boys would enjoy it. I have since read other books by the same author.

REVIEW BY Gabriel Hansen
|
Okay, I admit it. I am a star wars fan(atic). I have read the two prequels; Hard Contact and Triple Zero before I read this book and that definitely helped me to understand this book much better because there are a lot of references to the past two novels. These novels were all written by Karen Traviss who has written many other star wars novels which I found out about when I met her at a star wars convention and at her website: www.KarenTraviss.com. I think that Karen Traviss is probably one of the best star wars writers around. Why? Because she has a military background so she knows about the strategies in wars. Star Wars Republic Commando: True colours is different to all other Clone wars novels because it is written from the clones perspective and what their feelings are about the war. The main characters in the novel include a clone commando called Fi who is injured while on a mission with his squad. When his squad take him to a hospital, the medical droid is not bothered to save him as clones do not have any rights or personal records. Luckily, the squad know a woman called Besany Wennen who helps Fi with the aid of the police chief. Another important character in the story is the chief scientist Ko Sai who made the clones but she made them with rapid aging genes. Now the clones need to find her and force her to tell them which genes they need to switch on and off to stop their rapid aging process. If you are expecting loads of action from beginning to end, then this novel is not the best choice as it takes a long time to build up to the action. However, there is an excellent quality of writing by Karen Traviss with great atmosphere, scenery and descriptions. If you are a military fan, then I recommend this book for you as it is very tactical with good strategy and a brilliant use of technology. But warning: if you haven’t read the other novels in the Republic Commando series, you will be very lost and wondering what is going on at times.

by Derek Landy REVIEW BY BENJAMIN ROCHE OVERALL SCORE: 86%
|
Right, okay, let’s start at the beginning. This book I spotted in Waterstones a couple of months ago. I told my Mum how this book seemed to look curiously interesting. Weeks later, I received it for my birthday. The book really captures the atmospheric scenery, and it’s extremely easy to grasp a basic outline of what the characters look like. It’s obvious that Derek Landy, the author of the book is skilled at creating fantastical worlds. The main character, Stephanie, discovers the truth about her uncles’, Gordon, death. Skulduggery Pleasant himself is witty, entertaining but sometimes weak in character. The main villain, Serpine, is a classic menace, in a classically magical, and marvellous, world. He emanates evil, just like all those other brilliant villains I’m sure we have all heard about. The characters leave a lasting impression on you, even after you have finished reading the book. My personal favourite was the special guard clone, even though his part in the story wasn’t major, it still showed off Landy’s skill as an author. The storyline itself isn’t really anything new. Lovers of the brilliant Harry Potter series will instantly grasp the powerful narrative, and the ‘different world outside your doorstep’ theme is brilliantly twisted to fit the atmospheric world of Skulduggery Pleasant. One of the greatest scenes in the story is the break-in. It is actually quite scary but at the same time brilliantly twisted. Ancient menaces such as the vampires and wizards have come forth in a whole new, more interesting form. Landy’s brilliance is yet again exhibited here. I found that his versions of these classic beings are much more interesting. There is on incredibly bad part about this incredibly fun and enjoyable book. It is too short. The pages do not contain much text, and there aren’t many chapters. The end arrives much too quickly, and the end leaves you waning for more.
The magic that is
used throughout the story is things such as elements, which, as I’m sure you
already know, is the manipulation of fire, water, air and earth. The story
also revolves around a race of ancient beings known as the Faceless Ones,
and the Staff of the Ancients, which was used to banish them from the
universe. While the main story is action-packed, riveting and enjoyable,
there is dire need for a sequel, because this book alone will leave wanting
more. Read the prologue to one of Benjamin Roache's
novels by clicking on this icon.

by J.K Rowling Review by Megan Williams |
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is about Harry finding a book of spells in potion's class and cheating in his class using the book. At the start it explains that Professor Snape is a 'Death Eater' and promises he will look after Harry’s enemy Malfoy in Hogwarts. Harry starts having lessons with the head teacher Dumbledore and they start travelling in time. It's kind of like searching their memories and it tells them information about the past especially Voldermort . When they get to the last memory Harry needs to persuade his teacher to give it to him. In the end Harry and Voldermort go on a journey to an island in the middle of the lake to find a horcrux. A horcrux is something that Voldermort can be destroyed with and all seven horcruxes are needed. Dumbledore has to drink a liquid to weaken him to get the horcrux . When they reach the horcrux it turns out to be a locket and they take it back to Hogwarts, but on the way back they find the dark mark left by the death eaters and there is a fight between the death eaters and the young witches and wizards! Harry was under his invisibility cloak when Malfoy stood and looked at Dumbledore and Snape ...................... (No sorry Megan you can't tell them that or they wont want to read the book!Mr J) This book is very long but is worth reading and I would give this book a rating of 100/100 it is packed full of magic. This book is written by J.K.Rowling and her books are great. If you haven’t yet read this my personal opinion is to read if you do read it I hope you enjoy.

He looked round the corner and he saw a creature with 3 eyes and horrible slime. It had lots of fingers and lots of arms. He started shouting… ahhhhhh! (Well wouldn't you?) His mum and dad came to see what was the matter. His mum thought he had found something or hurt himself. Jed was scared and he didn’t know what to do. Read the book to find out

their 3-D hypno ring. They told Mr Krupp that he should do everything they tell him to do.
They told him that he was a superhero named Captain Underpants. Mr Krupp took it very seriously and really thought that he was a superhero,so he went out trying to save people and always got himself into trouble. It is told that whenever you click your fingers near Mr Krupp he will turn into Captain Underpants and when you pour water over him,he will turn back into nasty Mr Krupp. George and Harold always get told off. Once they even missed on a fantastic trip to a Chocolate Factory!!! Instead they had to clean the teachers staff room from top to bottom!!! but...instead of cleaning it they got their own back. Read the book to find out. This book is GREAT!!! EXCELLENT even!!! I personally would give this book a rating of 10 out of 10. I think a lot of adventure and enthusiasm has been put into this book. |

APRIL,2005 The Reptile Room
Author. Lemony Snicket Revied by Sam Beards |
It is about three very
unfortunate children. When their mother and father die in a horrific incident its up to
the family members to look after them. Violet the eldest is a very clever girl, Klaus on
the other hand cant keep his hands off books, their baby sister Sunny has only 4
teeth, but they're the sharpest teeth and her hobby is biting heads off dolls and things
like that. Things were going great until their mother and father died. The Baldelaires
went from children to being orphans. Their first carer for them was Count Olaf.He worked
them hard but there is something a bit unusual
about Count Olaf. I would rate the series so far 8.5 out of 10 |

Date: 16 November 2003 Author: Gwyneth Rhys Review by |
I think the Mum Hunt is a grabbing book because Esmie is trying to find the perfect woman for her dad. I think the Mum Hunt is a funny exciting book. This book is a great imaginative book. Gwyneth Rhys is a great imaginative author and is full of ideas. I would recommend this book to be suitable for ages between 9-12 years. The Mum Hunt is about a girl called Esmie. Her mum passed away before she was born. Esmie wishes to have her mum back, all of her friends have a mum except her. She starts to think that she should find her dad a partner. She said she was ill and goes to visit her baby sitter and asks her. Her babysitter agreed that it was an excellent idea. They set of the next day to find the perfect mum. In the mean time she has to run a normal life not letting nobody know. At the end she finds the right girl for her dad. My favourite part was when she went out to find her dad a partner. I liked this part because she comes across funny people.I think anybody whos reads this book would have a giggle and enjoy it. I have nearly read all of Gwyneth Rhyss books and I really enjoyed them. |

Hitler's Daughter
by Jackie French Review by Elliott Crowe
|
The story is about Mark and
his friends playing a story game. Its Annas turn to tell a story. She makes one up about Hitlers daughter. Hitlers daughter is called Heidi. A lady looks after Heidi. They both live in a huge house. Heidi doesnt know that Hitler is her father. She only sees him about two times a week. Heidi has to move to a much smaller house in the countryside. Heidi moved to the house for safety. She lives there for about six months and then moves again to a much smaller bunker under ground. Some how Heidi finds out that Hitler is her dad. The lady that had been looking after her is still with her until one night Heidi wakes up and the lady is gone. She has gone to her family, Heidi thinks. But she doesnt now for sure. Heidi is all alone in the bunker, she leaves the door open. She can hear lots of voices shouting, then she hears Hitlers voice. She runs down the corridor and sees him in a room. She looks in and then gets taken back to her bunker, by a solider. He packed her bag and takes her out of the bunker, into the war. They run and run then stops. They wait for a bit then he gets shot. Heidi runs and runs. A lady finds her. The lady has lost her daughter, and so Heidi joins the family. As they travel they find the ladys husband. They look after Heidi as their own child. They start a new happy life. They then move to Australia. Anas friends were wondering whether the storyis true or false, because Anna told the story really well. Did Hitler have a daughter? Thats a question Annas friend asked their families, but nobody knew the truth. I liked the book because it was so exciting, what was Heidi going to do next, where will she go? The best part was when Heidi moved to the bunker. Whenever she touched a wall her hands would start shaking because of the war above her. It is the best part also because she was on her own and the roof could have collapsed on her any time. |

| OCTOBER, 2003 THE WIND SINGER
Author: William Nicholson |
This is a story about three children on a journey to save their city, Aramanth, from the Zars.Their journey takes them beyond anything you could imagine with their lives being put at risk to find the lost voice of the wind singer,a statue like monument made out of pipes. This gripping tale will have you superglued to the book. His descriptions of places are so vivid that you feel you are taking the journey yourself. The characters are well thought out and have very different personalities. Kestrel, the main character, starts to hate school and exams so she decides to go against the rules, like some of us. She and her family have to face the consequences and Kestrel has to avoid being caught. And that's just the begining of the adventure. You will enjoy watching the character called Mumpo, who in the beginning everyone hates, changing into someone who is liked by most. If you like adventure stories, this is a must buy book!!! This is part of a triolgy and I can't wait to read the second book. |

Assessment
of Dannys accommodation.
Exterior. 1. General condition:It is wooden and the wood is rotting and there are traces of woodworms also some of the windows are smashed, most probably from stone throwing and other dangerous activities. 2. Ventilation: The ventilation is very poor for there is a birds nest in the chimney. Apart from that it is fine for the time being. 3. Access: The access into the dwelling is quite poor it is a very small door which if there was a fire near this door they would be severely burnt. Also the door opens and you see the whole room which includes a wooden kitchen, a bunk bed and a sofa. 4. Garden: The garden is over grown and has a lot of thorns and nettles. There is also there is a smashed paraffin burner that has a small flicker of life left in it which could cause very serious damage to people. 5. Health and safety issues : This family do not really care about there health and safety shown by the state of the bathroom which is out side and is extremely dirty which makes it very unhygienic. There is a lot of smashed glass over the floor and there is a double barrelled shot gun where anybody could get to. Interior. 1. Sleeping arrangements: There isnt much of a sleeping arrangement the caravan is so small but there is a bunk bed at the side of the room. It is very dangerous because it has very sharp edges because it is wood and has the accessional wood worm. 2. Kitchen: The kitchen is near the bed and it is made porcelain and wood. The cooker is a huge paraffin burner which looks like it could explode any minute now. 3.Bathroom : There is no bathroom. For the toilet is outside and it smelt so bad that we didnt go in there. The bath is a small metal tub which has no hot water. 4. General condition: The inside of the caravan is in a very bad condition, the roof is collapsing and it is leaking. The floor is a total tip and there are holes in it. It is unstable shown when you lean to one side it tilts and it could lead to very serious damage. 5. Health and Safety issues: They dont really care for there health and safety inside either because there are splinters coming out of the bed and the kitchen 6. Review by: Sam Newton Mark out of ten: 9/10 |
Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring The front cover makes me think that it will be about a ring and it will have loads of adventures in strange lands. It is all about a hobbit called Frodo who is quite happy in the Shire and is entrusted with the ring and takes it on a dangerous journey. The plot is all about a ring and it's master Sauron who looses the ring and Frodo picks it up and now he must throw it into Mount Doom................ It takes a while to get going and it is quiet for the first few chapters untill you get to the house of Tom Bombadill and then it gets really exciting. Not all the charachters are introduced in the first few pages and some of the characters aren't introduced untill page 395 which is quite late in the story . The setting is quite inportant to the story because it is all about people who are in a different land in Middle Earth. The story does change from place to place quite often because they are walking through strange lands and some are magical. The ending is a cliffhanger you want to see if Boromir dies and if the ring gets taken off Frodo. The book is quite brilliant and and I really liked it but sometimes it is quite hard to understand and very unpredictable .

The main characters are Farmer Ted Tubbs, Clarence the cat,Nanny the goat,Megan the corgi and of corse,Ace the pig.He is called Ace because of the mark on his side that looks like a playing card. In the story Farmer Tubbs realises that Ace the piglet can understand human speech ,like no other animal can.Ace gives two grunts for yes and one grunt for no.Clarence the cat invites Ace into the house to see Megan the corgi's trophies for the fattest dog_even though she thinks there for the preettiest dog! Ace sees a television while he is in the house and liked to watched it every day because he could understand human speech. One day when Ace went to market with farmer tubbs ,they went to a pub called The Bull and Ace got drunk! Deep Trouble II This book is about a boy called Billy, his sister Sheena and his uncle Doctor D. They are in Doctor D's lab boat floating in the Caribbean. It's the summer holidays and Billy's uncle (Doctor D) keeps on finding this horrible plankton. One day they were swimming and they found some totally unexpected giant fish. There were giant jelly fish the size of cars and sardines the size of doors! Billy, Doctor D and Sheena are really shocked. Another time a giant sea snail silently crept on the deck. Billy and Doctor D are trying to find out what's making them or who's making them so big. I think the setting is really very good, and the title fits in with the story. I didn't think it was very good at first but when I started reading it it became more exciting. It was the picture on the front that caught my attention, it was a fish that was bright orange and had beady, pink eyes. The story was nice and easy to follow. I felt as if I was there. Billy's mum and dad were still at home. The main character was Billy. This book was a sequel of `Deep trouble` which I haven't read. This book was classed a horror story but I thought it was more of an adventure story. Mark out of ten: 10/10 |
